Technical Textiles provide new opportunities to the Global Textile Industry to have long term sustainable future. The research and development in last 20 years indicates one of the major opportunities in the global technical textile market, reaching to different application domains including vehicles, construction, agriculture, sports, health care, defense and security, electronics, power, environmental technologies and many more. The sector is identified as one of the most emerging and inventive industries of the world with an annual growth rate of 4% globally. Globally, the technical textiles contribute to about 27 percent of textile industry, in some of the western countries its share is even 50 percent while in India it is a meager 11 percent. In India, the sector has registered compounded annual rate of growth (CAGR) of 11% and the market size is reached to Rs. 1,58,540 crore in 2016-17 from the market size of Rs 70,151 crore in 2012-13. Despite of achieving high growth rate the per capita consumption of technical textiles in India is 1.7 per kg vis–a-vis 10-12 kg in developed countries. This sector is still import-intensive. In the last few years, the industry has witnessed a rise in imports - it stood at USD 1.4 Billion in Financial Year (FY) 2014-15 with a CAGR of 8% since FY 2007-08. Though the country currently spends a significant amount on imports, the dependence can eventually be reduced by further investing in technology-heavy products. The trend of the future is to do more, achieve something, something new in all arenas of research, innovation, market development and business.
